what to expect:

Come and learn dances from two different cultures in this first Ottawa Dance Exchange. Local folk trio Fiddlehead Soup and friends is teaming up with Balfolk Toronto's Emilyn Stam and friends to present this evening of dance, fun and community.

What types of dances will we be doing? Balfolk is a tradition of dance that originates from various European traditions. For this first event, the focus is on dances from Brittany, as well as some dances from Burgundy and some from Scotland.

Do I need experience? No experience necessary as all the dances will be taught and walked through. All you need is enthusiasm! And sometimes train wrecks occur, so a sense of humour goes a long way as well, because this is FUN!

Do I need a dance partner? No!! You are welcome to bring a dance partner, but you will be dancing with many different people throughout the night. It's a great way to meet new friends.

What ages can attend? There is no age limit, up or down, but the really young might have to be carried, so prepare for that! Some dances can get the heart rate up a bit, so people who have medical conditions might like to be aware of that. The caller will give an indication of how physically demanding the dance might be.
What should I bring?
  • Indoor dancing shoes. (That is, shoes that you are comfortable dancing in.)
  • Water bottle.
  • Comfortable cool clothing (it can be an idea to bring a change of clothing for venturing out into the cold afterwards).
  • Friends.
This is a perfect opportunity to do something with multiple generations of your family. So bring your kids and your parents! (When was the last time you could do that?)
